I left John on the beach, cursing to himself – in particular he was all hot and bothered about a band of thick low cloud that had just arrived as the sun was rising. I headed back up to the van where we had camped to make breakfast. The sunrise looked pretty good from where […]
Rockpools
Tread carefully – there’s another world beneath our feet. The evening light was poor but we were mesmerised for hours by these network of rockpools. There were hundreds of sea anemones, star fish, sea urchins, fish, crabs and even a shy octopus.
All change
We try to arrive on location a few hours before official sunset. It’s a time to relax and plan the shots. But more often than not, this calm preparation ends up being interrupted by last minute frantic changes – hurriedly clambering over rocks, swapping lenses, re-adjusting the tripod. As the light quickly changes, so does […]
Gannets amongst the grey clouds
We sheltered in a cave from the rain, a bit fed up with the weather, sunset looked like being another ‘grey one’. Perhaps the 5am wake-ups were taking their toll. A few moments later, as I’m setting up the picture, Be turns towards me – “Look at all the gannets out to sea, there’s loads […]
Treasured possessions
Belinda is famously possessive of her binoculars. Even though I bought them as a surprise christmas present, I’m rarely permitted to use them. If I take them without consent, I’ll be guaranteed to receive a stern look. However, I remember last year as we watched an otter swimming in the river close by, she passed […]
On the edge
I said “You’re not thinking about going up there, are you?”. John “No, I’m just going to look over the other side, I will be back in a minute”. A few moments later I turned around to see this. That dot on the cliff top is him. I should have known.
Time waits…
In many ways life has become a lot more simple. We now concentrate on two things. Preparation and hope. We prepare for the hour slot at the beginning and end of the day. We hope this time brings something special to capture. But lately it’s been all or nothing. Thick dark clouds with no colour […]
Ultimate new gadget
The DJI Phantom 2 Quadcopter with Zenmuse H3-3D 3 Axis Gimbal. It sounds mighty impressive doesn’t it? Well, it does to me. In the 10 days leading up to our departure from southern England the phrase ‘dji phantom 2’ was typed into Google many, many times. Having seen some footage online (click here), we thought […]
Slow sunset
This our first ‘proper’ sunset. The weather has been mixed. It’s not been so much the famous Asturian rain or the temperature, which has been fine for camping. But we’ve had more than our fair share of thick cloud covering the sky at vital moments of sunrise and sunset. This evening was different. Some 20 […]
A sign of things to come
This picture was taken on the move – somewhere in the Bay of Biscay. The final preparations in the 10 days leading up to our departure had been very busy. We had under-estimated just how much there was left to do. But now we were finally aboard the ferry sailing towards Gijón on the north […]
